A user from Reddit is warning fellow Bell users to be careful when talking to callers claiming to be Bell tech support.
The Reddit user is subscribed to a home internet plan with Bell. It remains to be seen if the user was targeted specifically or if the scammers are just shooting in the dark.
Telcos Don’t Normally Call
I worked in a call center of a Canadian Telecom company. I agree with other Redditors in this thread when they say that telcos would never call you if there is an ongoing technical issue. Normally, they only call if you initiate the communication.
They may call, for example, if you scheduled a call-back on the Bell Canada website. But in this case, the original post author implied that they were not expecting it.
Scam Calls Prey on the Elderly and Newcomers
If you know better than to answer calls like this, you may not be the intended target, but someone close to you could be at risk, as pointed out by some Reddit users:
The elderly and those new to Canada continue to be targeted by scams all over the country. Just recently, a 76-year-old in St. Thomas, Ontario lost $9,000 when scammers called them in the middle of the night.
With a large number of elderly citizens living alone, Canada continues to be the target of phone scams. If you know someone living alone and vulnerable to these scams, call them frequently to check up on them.
